Parent Advisory Committee  - Oct. 20, 2008

Mrs. Ward, Ms. Davis, Annette Weber, Mr. Kueter, Mrs. Slagle.

1. Bond Issue

Annette Weber talked about the bond issue. Homes with a value of $100,000 will have a monthly raise of $1.71; a home with $200,000 will have a tax increase of $3.41 a month. The school principals have a list of improvements that need to be made to the buildings, i.e.: leaky roofs, non-working fire alarms.  The web site were-4kids.org has lots of information.

2. Review of RMS PAC Goals.

Mrs. Ward passed out the PAC goals.
A. There will be continuous, measurable gains in educational achievement for all students groups.  (Focusing on the gains in achievement)
B. Potential at-risk students will be identified and programs established to help ensure successful learning experiences. (This is an ongoing process).
C. Rangely Middle School will maintain its present drop out rate of 0%.
D. Rangely Middle School will maintain, for the 2008-2009 school year, an attendance rate at least 95%. (Due to the size of the school it only takes a few to bring the attendance below 95%, and illness this year has been a factor.  There is still an incentive plan. The Middle School will be making an attendance policy).
E. Rangely Middle School staff will emphasize civility (common everyday courtesies).
F. Develop a student achievement model that uses scientifically based interventions, instructional practices and progress monitoring as defined in the Response to Intervention Model. (All the interventions are in place and now the goal will read Maintain a student achievement model).
G. Monitor school safety and security and respond as appropriate. (The Middle School will be locked at 5:00 pm).

3. Sports (Eligibility, Football Issue, 6th grade participation)

Eligibility rule has been changed. The students no longer will be able to make up grades each week; the students will now be ineligible for an entire week.  There are four days of warning. At this time if a student is failing one class the student may practice but not play a game. If a student is failing two classes the student may not practice.
There is concern about the injuries against Craig’s football team. The recommendation is to not play Craig in football.
6th grade participation. Mrs. Ward called other schools and Hayden is the only school that allows 6th graders to play two sports, boys could participate in wrestling and track and the girls could play volleyball and track. The committee will revisit this at a later time with the goal to have answered for next year.

4. Power Standards/ Curriculum

CSAP has been broken down according to standards and sub-standards. Some standards (power standards) are given more points than other standards. The teachers are concentrating and making sure that they review and revisit those standards in the lessons.

5. School Improvement: Data Walks

An administrator enters a class for a short time, to evaluate if the students know the point of the lesson.  This is not an evaluation of the teacher but of the system. Mrs. Ward explained the short form that is filled out for this process.

6. Behavior Supports (Incentive Plan)

The students went to the park to play and eat ice cream.  The students were excited.
