Parent Advisory Committee - Jan 24, 2008
Mrs. Ward, Mrs. Davis, Mr. Dillon, Mrs. Staley, Mrs. Denny, Mrs. Bailey, Mr. Day
1. Attendance Review
Attendance was at 93.9%.
2. MAPS Incentives
A difficulty is getting the students to give there best when taking the test. The Middle School initiated a competition that the class with the highest score for each test (Reading, Comp, Math) would win a pizza party. Mr. Day felt this was effective.
3. Overview MAPS Result
On the testing the comparison through time the mean scores (average) showed some growth, the median scores (middle) showed great growth. Statistically the mean score can be brought down quickly and far by a few very low scores. The school is working to get those students to retake the test because often the students don’t give the test their full effort.
4. Positive Behavior Supports
The raffle rewards have been put on hold until a way in which they can be consistently offered is found. Instead the school initiated a school wide reward to all students who do not have more than two office referrals and/or refocus sheets. The reward is an after noon at the Rec Center. This seemed to have a positive effect.
5. Parent Supports
The committee is still looking for someone to contact parents to create a list of volunteers for sponsoring activities or to help in the classroom. Mrs. Stapp and Mrs. Phelan were mentioned as people to contact.
6. February meeting moved from Monday Feb 18th (President’s Day) to February 20th at the High School Library.
7. Potential Capital Bond
The School Board would like to put together a Capital Projects Package. This would be large dollar items, i.e.: a new boiler at the Middle School and Parkview, fix the cooling tower at the Middle school, busses, etc. In response to the Boards query of how would the proposal be received by the public, Mrs. Staley thought that a lot of the battle was in the selling. She felt pictures of damage or wear would help the reception of any proposal. Mrs. Denny thought as long as it was for infrastructure or really core projects (boilers not carpet) the community would be behind the idea.
Repair of the middle School field could be considered, as it is full of holes and uneven.
