Parent Advisory Committee - Feb. 20, 2008
Ms. Davis, Mr. Day, Mrs. Carlson, Mrs. Bailey,
1. Presentation of Calendar.
Mr. Jansen presented the two calendar proposals. Calender B is like the current calender. He explained the reasoning for the great changes in calendar AA, which was to get more contiguous weeks of instruction.
2. Presentation of HB 1118 – Graduation Skills
Mr. Day explained what HB 1118: the district is requested to gather information from the community on what skills the student’s should leave with. To this end the district provided committee parents a packet of standards that the district teaches. Each packet has the complete Colorado state standards for English, Math, Science, and Social Studies. The question is “If our student’s leave High School with these standards is it enough?” The idea is not to add courses, but to look at skills. This will be looked at during the upcoming year.
3. Attendance Data
Over all attendance is 93.9%. In the sixth grade had only under 80% and that student has left the area. Seventh grade one student had a serious illness. No seventh grade under 80%. 8th Grade only one student under 80% and that student has had serious health issues.
4. Reading Program
The board has charged the Middle School with getting a reading program for all students. Mr. Day would like to look at hiering a reading instructor. In order to find time for the reading class there are two options one get rid of exploratory classes (not a optimal idea) and the other is to shorten classes by 5 minutes and add another period. The PAC committee unanimously agreed to the addition of the instructor and adding a class period.
