Rangely Middle School

February 21, 2006

Members in attendance:  Jim Day, Amy Ward, Mary Dillon, Alicia Cushman, Shirley Parsons, Christy Stephens, Doretta Barlow, Cindy Horntvedt.  Visiting community members:  Owen Robertson

I           Financial Report

  • Jim Day presented and overview of the budget information for the district as compared to last year.
  • Mr. Day asked that the members look over the information and to please contact him with any questions or if more information was needed.

II         Parent Survey

  • Alicia Cushman: PAC volunteer coordinator created a volunteer survey to help get more parents involved in different activities at RMS
  • The survey will be mailed home to parents and results should be available by the next PAC meeting.

III        School Calendar

  • Jim Day reviewed the results of this year’s calendar committee. 
  • The calendar does not reflect any additional inservice days for the elementary school.  Once the basic calendar is set, then the elementary days will be added.
  • There were minimal questions about the calendar with the exception of Christmas break but all agreed that the break was the best option available.

IV        CSAP Testing

  • Amy Ward presented information regarding CSAP testing dates and the schedule arrangement of 2 tests/day throughout a two-week period upon returning from spring break.  This testing window leave plenty of time for make-up tests to be taken and still mailed back within the time allotted.
  • Mr. Day suggested that PAC members to brainstorm incentive activities to encourage students to try their best and to take the test serious.  Members are to e-mail Mr. Day with any ideas.

V         School Climate

  • Mr. Day reviewed the status of discipline issues at RMS.  Currently there have been only 3 suspensions and minimal discipline issues at the middle school.  Mr. Day commented how well this year’s students are conducting themselves.

VI        Meal Money

  • At the last PAC meeting the question over when is meal money appropriate for school sponsored trips. 
  • Mr. Day followed up and checked on the high school policy, which is that if an overnight trip in unavoidable in order to participate in the activity that meal money is provided at a rate of $3.00/day.  RMS follows the same policy.

VII            Internet Safety

  • Christy Stephens presented information that she obtained from a recent training on keeping your children safe while using the Internet.  
  • She is interested in brining the workshop to parents in Rangely.
  • The class is 71/2 hours, which was a concern to PAC members.
  • Mr. Day is send the brochure to parents and requesting feedback to see how many parents would be interested before scheduling the workshop.
  • Related discussions included the safety of Rangely Schools in regard to using the Internet.  Mr. Day explained about our filter and how it works and commented on its effectiveness.
